Sander created her first collection of women's clothing in 1968. Since then, her designs have consistently featured a pared-down style with straightforward cuts and the finest materials, representing fashion that lends its wearers self-confidence and strength. She has also developed new, comprehensive design approaches for architecture and shop design and given her designs—right down to the lighting details—completely new dimensions.
‘Jil Sander’s designs have always been for herself—for the specific requirements of a personality which embodies strength and vulnerability, a personality which is as modern as it is formative. One cannot imagine a greater example of user-centricity’, said Andrej Kupetz, Executive Director of the German Design Council. ‘For Sander, shaping the context in which her designs are sold is an obvious choice. For her, photography, graphics and packaging are fundamental aspects of her products. And above this, she wants to shape the world around her. In this spirit, we could not think of a more worthy recipient of the 2018 German Design Award’s Personality Prize than the German designer Jil Sander’.
