Train Control Centre

Train Control Centre

Description

The new train control centre is positioned right between the tracks of the Dutch train lines near the largest station in the Netherlands. The control centre itself is lifted from the ground to give a distant view of passing trains. The horizontal lines in COR-TEN steel in the façades mimic the dynamics of the railway and give the centre an immediately recognisable identity. Passing travellers will perceive the building as part of the railway system, and the slat-like structure gives the illusion that the building itself is moving.

Statement of the jury

The design of this project impeccably transposes the theme of rail traffic into modern architecture that is magnificently integrated into the train environment. The slats used here evoke dynamic movement that evokes the passing trains – an effect that is accentuated by the irregular form of the building and its dramatic overhangs and openings. An intriguing building that is even impressive to viewers as they pass by it quickly.
