Baan Nong Bua School

Baan Nong Bua School

Description

Baan Nong Bua School is the local elementary school which has been affected by the 2014 earthquake in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The school is designed to be an earthquake-resisted building with the structure made out of steel. The flexibility of steel and the skeletal frame structure can also absorb the vibration of earthquakes. Moreover, with the vernacular design, the school itself is designed to respond to local factors including material, ventilation and weather.

Statement of the jury

The earthquake-proof architecture of this school sends an important signal, in light of the catastrophic earthquake that occurred in northern Thailand in 2014. Thanks to a simple, modular structure and the use of local materials such as bamboo, this concept can be realized in virtually all regions of Thailand.
