Hauptbahnhof Wien

Hauptbahnhof Wien

Description

Vienna’s new central station project is pivotal to the city’s transport policy as it enables trains to converge in a single location for the first time. The original master plan was overhauled in 2004 and the new version led to the development of an urban model for the station and its surroundings. The “Vienna Team” working group managed the overall realisation, with the Hotz/Hoffmann-Wimmer team handling the architectural design. Theo Hotz Partner were responsible for the sculptural roof.

Statement of the jury

Vienna’s new Hauptbahnhof Wien, or Vienna central train station, is an urban architectural highlight which, thanks to the modern sculptural design aesthetic of its spectacular roof, sets new standards and has become a calling card for the city.
