Günter Woyte Farewell – „Ü“ of Günter

Günter Woyte Farewell – „Ü“ of Günter

Description

Task: Farewell for Günter Woyte, the longtime teacher for “Basics of Design”. Before his teacher’s time, he worked on posters and the like for/with famous Herbert Lupin. Idea: Six posters (of different designers), which form the whole of “GÜNTER”. The colouration corresponds to that of Roth-Händle Cigarettes, whose posters he co-designed in the 1970s. Solution: “Ü” that laughs and cries at the same time… and its also a pen (tip is a teardrop). “With an auspicious and a dropping eye.” Hamlet 1.2.11.

Statement of the jury

The farewell poster honouring Günter Woyte is one of six works that together form the name “GÜNTER”. The motif transforms the quotation from Hamlet “With one auspicious and one dropping eye” into an expressive graphic in the style of the 1970s which communicates multiple messages simultaneously despite its simplicity. A very beautiful and elegant work in terms of both form and content.
