Xiexie Cafe is an interior design project located beside the famous West Lake in Hangzhou, China. The architects’ intention is to create a warm, welcoming space in this tourist area. The interior is clearly divided into two spaces by use of different materials. The bright “sunroom” has a glass façade and a ceiling composed of woven wooden structures that create interesting shadow patterns during the daytime, while a space with a lower ceiling is mainly for service and customers who prefer more privacy.
The signature feature of this completely glassed-in café is its roof, which is composed of woven wooden structures that create interesting shadow patterns. The roof also endows the café with an identity all its own.
