Sentralen

Sentralen

Description

Sentralen is a transformation of a late 19th century bank and office building into a new culture hub. The new cultural centre Sentralen occupies Christiania Sparebank’s old bank building (1899) and the adjacent office building (1900) which was acquired by the Sparebank Foundation in 2007. The buildings are registered as a cultural heritage, and a continuous dialogue with the conservation authorities has also been maintained throughout. Marks acquired over time have been left visible.

Statement of the jury

This new cultural centre intelligently connects two landmark buildings that were once home to a bank. The outstanding design aesthetic has allowed two separate constructions to be merged harmoniously into a modern and functional unit.
