Biology of Metal: Metal Craftsmanship in Tsubame-Sanjo

Biology of Metal: Metal Craftsmanship in Tsubame-Sanjo

Description

This exhibition presents an illustration of how craftsmanship and small industry are embedded in tradition, embrace the new and adapt in a changing society. It focuses on the metalworking industry in Tsubame-Sanjo in northern Japan. This region produces the majority of all of present-day Japan’s cutlery, its businesses have developed ultra-fine metal-polishing techniques, and the area boasts a centuries-old »Living National Treasure« copperware manufacturing tradition.

Statement of the jury

Despite the level of diversity in the exhibition, the look is differentiated, clear and pleasantly concise. The objects were meticulously arranged and placed in the room like individual installations. The consistently white surfaces of the walls and plinths recede neutrally and make the natural colour of the metal appear even clearer. This concentrates the visitor’s complete attention on the exhibits, which at the same time lends the space a high degree of tranquillity. An interesting, incredibly beautiful exhibition that is also a wonderful place for contemplation.
