The historic Ofenhaus in Augsburg’s decommissioned gas plant is now home to the theatre and gastronomic offerings. Visitors to the Ofenhaus experience a one-of-a-kind fusion of rustic elements and elegant design simultaneously incorporating history and modernity. While meeting today’s standards in acoustics, climate control and fire safety, the design strives to maintain the site’s industrial historic substance. The site has become a contemporary meeting place with a high sojourn quality.

Statement of the jury

The combination of roughness and elegance, history and modernity, along with the high ceilings, creates a special atmosphere. An interesting concept that predominantly keeps the historical architecture in view and reinvigorates it with a modern interior and a carefully-designed lighting concept.
