Haus der Europäischen Geschichte, Brüssel

Haus der Europäischen Geschichte, Brüssel

Description

The museum is located in Leopold Park, at the heart of the European Quarter. The former George Eastman building (originally built in 1930 as a dental clinic), in need of repairs, has been expanded with a transparent implant. The free exhibition box arrangement inside the glazed space is purposely placed in contrast to the symmetry of the older building. During the day, the printed glass envelope frames the dynamic interior activities and filters the view. At night, the envelope appears to dissolve.

Statement of the jury

The interior structure offers a fascinating contrast to the historical architecture. The boxes visible from the outside are intriguing and give the facade a distinctive appearance. A fine example of how to work with existing architecture.
