Werk 7, Kartoffelhalle

Description

Evolving from the former site of Pfanni at Munich’s east train station is the new Werksviertel Mitte. WERK 7 was historically used to store potatoes for Pfanni’s productions. The existing structures have given the hall its unique industrial character until today. The hall was refurbished and, through a minimal amount of precise interventions, was reborn. The hall’s industrial spirit and powerful atmosphere have evolved through these interventions to illuminate the hall’s unique character.

Statement of the jury

The addition of further volumes to the historical flat industrial halls creates new areas for varied purposes including residential, work, culture and leisure. The former potato warehouse WERK 7 has been renovated and modernised but remains reminiscent of its historical function of storing potatoes in many details and therefore creates a unique atmosphere.
