HITO to KI to HITOTOKI

HITO to KI to HITOTOKI

Description

The tradition of brewing sake in wooden barrels is a prominent feature in the Japanese sake culture. However, there is only one company remaining in Japan that is capable of building large wooden barrels. Imayo Tsukasa Sake Brewery commissioned craftsmen to build the cedar wood barrels, and employees of the brewery took an active part in their production as well. For the label design, we traced a part of the grain pattern from the cedar wood barrels.

Statement of the jury

The tradition of brewing sake in wooden barrels is an important feature of the culture surrounding the Japanese beverage. The Imayo Tsukasa Sake Brewery commissioned craftspeople to build the cedar barrels. The brewery workers were also actively involved in the production. To emphasise this process on the bottle labels, a section from the grain pattern on the cedar barrels was traced. The fact that the pattern practically speaks for itself as an important design feature and only the yellow colour references the rice is excellent and with its restrained, radically minimalist aesthetic, perfectly meets the conventions of clarity in Japanese culture.
