The Ornithopter

The Ornithopter

Description

Inspired by the mechanics of early flying machines, The Ornithopter perches on grass, casting flickering shadows to create the enjoyable shaded public space in Hong Kong.

Once a visitor pedals on the bicycles' wheels, the pair of double-stacked wings slowly flap up and down, interacting with the light and shadow in real-time.

While flapping wings symbolise our pursuit of dreams, pedaling the bikes symbolises that we are persistently working out our dreams.

The artwork creates a dialogue with the public who instantly transforms the surrounding environment.

Rhythm of the flapping wings echoes with the speed of the city, and activates the public place.

Statement of the jury

The »Ornithopter« translates the impression of archaic flying machines into an appealing installation that becomes a landmark in public spaces thanks to its size, sculptural design language and colour scheme. The pedal-powered wings are a beautiful interactive idea and enhance the installation’s poetic character.
