Located in a heterogeneous area, adjacent to the island highway, the new University building wraps itself around an intimate open space, creating an interior landscape. A “skin” of suspended concrete slats adopts a curved shape that wraps and protects the interior open space of the building. The concrete skin houses the teaching areas offering collaborative and innovative spaces for an experimental education, while at the same time defining the building’s urban and territorial image.

Statement of the jury

The property takes the concrete employed as a construction material from its surroundings and creates a place of tranquility in its interior. As part of this transformation the dynamic curves of the design provide a striking contrast to the rough surface of the concrete surfaces. This is a superb design of brutalistic beauty that appears wonderfully vibrant and very authentic.
