Bergsteigen im Flachland
Statement of the jury
In his novel Bergsteigen im Flachland [Mountaineering in the lowlands], the author combines laconic accurate language with stories that are full of life. The typographical design of the title refers to aspects of political and social tensions in Europe by actually separating parts that belong together, or words such as “Bergsteigen” [Climbing] and “Flachland” [Lowland]. The puristic design dispenses with distinctive imagery or illustration and still speaks volumes. Very impressive solution using classical typography.
