Description

The 4-storey housing complex sits on a lively shopping lane in south Tokyo. Every single opening is designed in the pure, primitive shape of a square and rhythmically connects spaces inside and out. Steel window frames add a non-uniform expression to the façade, emerging as distinctive icons in the cityscape. A minimalist interior suggests life unreliant on products, yet the spaces that can be used in an unlimited manner stimulate new ideas. Design here is in directly connected with the way of living.

Statement of the jury

The rigorously structured look of the façade is relieved by the projecting window frames in an interesting fashion, attracting no shortage of attention and recognisability.
