Hengqin Culture & Art Complex

Description

We won the competition for the new mixed-use Civic Centre in Hengqin next to Macao, which is going to be built in 2022. Instead of a solid building, we are creating a void field for the high-density urban context, while integrating a varied programme into one complex and interweaving energetic lives together. The main public space on the lower level is composed of three giant arched caverns coated in wood and bamboo panels, to create a transparent and open living room for urban life.

Statement of the jury

The huge arc that is reminiscent of a stone bridge allows the iconic complex to appear light, open and inviting and at same time make its appearance unmistakeable. A striking design that also appears very modern and contemporary as a result of the verdant, terrace-like roof structure.
