Description

Forming the nucleus of the Werksviertel-Mitte district, an urban regeneration plan on a former industrial site, this mixed-used development stands out with its bold and expressive art façade featuring verbal expressions found in German comics. A key to the building design was in the flexibility of the spaces. The 5.5 m ceilings allow for level changes to be added and the placement of circulation on the outside of the building means that the interiors can be easily reconfigured.

Statement of the jury

The idea of integrating floor-high comic expressions, which are brightly illuminated at night, into the design of the façade is original and makes the building unique.
