AVOS

AVOS

Description

The little black: The residential house – AVOS, clad in charred larch, was built on the flat vineyards of Lower Austria. »If the property of his first creation is a vineyard that has been family-owned for generations, if the building owner is his older brother, then the demand for a timeless building that is in harmony with nature was paramount from the very beginning.« The Süddeutsche Zeitung later captioned it »formful and archaic, yet amazingly graceful«.

Statement of the jury

At first glance, the building, the family home of the owner, appears inconspicuous with its clear, direct architecture and façade made of charred larch. On closer inspection, the building convinces both from the outside and the inside with well thought-out details. While the extensive glazing makes large portions of the residential space merge evocatively with the surrounding landscape, narrow windows frame the spectacular view as lively decorative paintings. A monolith within nature, modern, elegant and classy in its effect and simultaneously so meticulously embedded that it harmonises with the surroundings in the midst of the vineyard. An internally consistent design with a character that is as unique and unmistakeable as a good wine.
