Details

The project site is a new subdivision located in the suburbs. In Japanese residential areas, houses of similar size are built on evenly divided plots of land. In many homes, residents keep their curtains closed for privacy and security reasons. We sought to create a design that strikes the contradictory ideals of privacy and openness. In the centre of the building, we placed a skip-top terrace, which is at a different height from the interior floor. This terrace also acts as a screen from the outdoors, giving residents a sense of security and openness. This house will harmonize with the city and change the uniform streetscape.

The Jury‘s Statement

The subtle interplay of shelter and openness forms the core of »House with skip terrace«. Its striking, elevated terrace creates powerful visual connections to the surroundings while protecting the residents’ privacy. The confident use of regional wood and the harmonious spatial sequence reinforce the distinctive concept. The exceptional synthesis of comfort, elegance, and openness in the living experience is especially convincing.
