Details

The MITS Diabetes Centre, the only one of its kind in Germany, is developing a small bioreactor that can produce insulin and deliver it to the body. This quantum leap in diabetes therapy became the inspiration for the design. Like the membrane of this bioreactor, the gable façade also acts between the outside and the inside and lets seemingly floating cubes project into the public entrance hall - as communication cells for creative brainstorming.

The Jury‘s Statement

The translation of the scientific achievements into the architecture of the research center succeeded on a high design level. One strong idea here is the seemingly floating cubes for communicative meetings, which project into the hall and, with their striking wooden slat construction, form an interesting contrast to the white of the room. Another nice detail is the circular arrangement of windows of various sizes on the side facade.
