Total demolition and rebuilding from scratch are common practices, despite resource shortages and rising emissions. Where's the logic? For Munich Creative Business Week 2024, we exhibited the interactive installation “Feierabendziegel” to highlight urban mining and circularity. A large glass box at Königsplatz was filled with materials from a demolished building. Some were transformed into artworks, while others were reused in new construction projects. Most importantly, it sparked the debate: When a building material has fulfilled its purpose, is it the end, or can it be repurposed? Photo credits: Peter Neusser.

The Jury‘s Statement

This installation strikingly demonstrates how building materials can be revitalized for a second life. By creatively showcasing demolition materials, it not only promotes the reuse of durable materials but also sparks public discourse on sustainability and resource conservation. »Feierabendziegel: From has-been to must-have?« highlights the importance of circularity in architecture.
