Details

Tatami mats used in Japanese living spaces are made from plants known for their rich aroma and pleasant texture, equipped with capabilities for moisture control and odour reduction. SORI and MUKURI from 'TATAMI ReFAB PROJECT' are knitted furniture created by tatami resin that combines discarded tatami mats, tatami production waste and plant-based biodegradable resin. The product reconstructs traditional Japanese shapes and materials by 3D printing, and re-embed tatami into modern living culture.

The Jury‘s Statement

SORI and MUKURI from the 'TATAMI ReFAB PROJECT' are extremely impressive examples of innovative product design based on Japanese traditions. This knitted furniture uses recycled materials and production scraps from tatami mats, combined with biodegradable resin. The integration of 3D printing allows the reconstruction of traditional Japanese forms and materials for modern living. The design is not only graphically and architecturally appealing, but is an impressive demonstration of how tradition and sustainability can be combined in a contemporary context. SORI and MUKURI thus stand for innovative design that is not only aesthetically convincing but also makes an important contribution to sustainability.
