The first German in space had a watch of the Ruhla brand strapped to his wrist on his historic mission in 1978. The Ruhla watch brand is now being revived to commemorate Sigmund Jähn's historic flight by launching the "Space Control" watch series. The modern reinterpretation of the historic timepiece is produced at the original location, at Uhrenwerke Ruhla, which since 2019 is part of POINTtec, the family-run watch specialist from Ismaning near Munich.
The Jury‘s Statement
The "Ruhla" is a contemporary reinterpretation of the legendary watch that Sigmund Jähn wore on his wrist in 1978 as the first German in space. A beautiful reminiscence that is as elegant as it is high-quality and still strikingly reflects the futuristic spirit of that time.
