Details
Vestre Habitats is a series of products that aims to increase biodiversity in urban areas. Initiated by designers René Hougaard and Alexander Qual, it focuses on five main challenges: the need for more areas that accommodate biodiversity, the importance of diverse areas, the necessity of learning about nature, the decline in insect populations due to lack of habitat and food, and the need for increased awareness and commitment to prevent a sixth mass extinction. The series consists of a bird and bat house, an Insect hotel, a compost planter, Pile, log and house bench mainly contributing for safe nesting spaces for birds, bats and insects.
The Jury‘s Statement
A subtle fusion of aesthetic clarity and functional relevance distinguishes »Vestre Habitats«. The modular elements create effective habitats for wildlife and raise awareness of biodiversity through visual and tactile experiences. Particularly impressive is the consistent integration of ecological principles into a harmonious, city-shaping product design. This characterful series sets a powerful benchmark for sustainable design in public spaces.
