Questions for Stephanie Jasny

What made you become a designer?

My enthusiasm for creating something real from an idea, using technology and materials to give parts of your own imaginary world physical form for those around you. It is precisely this creative aspect of furniture design that gives me most pleasure.

What would you be doing now if you had not become a designer?

After my A levels I toyed with the idea of studying architecture. It seemed to me to be an equally interesting creative profession. Looking back I would also have enjoyed studying a humanities discipline. I am very interested in sociological and cultural science issues and developments.

How do you feel about the idea that form should follow function?

To my mind this classic guiding principle is more relevant in other areas such as transportation design rather than in furniture design. When it comes to furniture people have less specific ideas about what the purpose of something should be – often logic alone does not determine it. Take the lemon squeezer by Philippe Starck, which despite its exaggerated, non-functional design found its way into many households and even gained cult status.
