Alexander Calder: From the Stony River to the Sky

Alexander Calder: From the Stony River to the Sky

Description

Calder transformed sculpture by suspending forms in space that continually shift with time. Similarly, the inside text design shifts to accommodate images with a changing centre line. The book’s front cover reinterprets Calder’s mobile, with a simple shape die-cut into a rough, softly textured board. Working with an unexpected binding of a double Swiss-bound brochure, the cover contains two distinct yet connected books, drawing inspiration directly from Calder’s play with space and colour.

Statement of the jury

While the book appears very puristic on the outside, striking punched-out sections on the inside arouse curiosity and interest. The decision to have the publication consist of two books makes intelligent reference to the artist’s creative play with space and colour.
