Stadtbibliothek in Brügge

Stadtbibliothek in Brügge

Description

Studio Farris Architects won the competition for the renovation and expansion of the Sint-Andries city library, in Bruges, Belgium. The existing library, alongside other public services, was located in a building that’s listed on the inventory of architectural heritage. The extension is smaller than the main building in terms of dimensions and is visually disconnected from it by its materials: the façades are finished in Corten steel panels.

Statement of the jury

With its linear form, the incisive window placement and the rust-red cladding, the building forms a bold contrast to the main building and becomes an independent, distinctive property.
