Das KOHO — Weiterbauen statt Abreißen

A historic townhouse in Altdorf near Nuremberg, already approved for demolition, was preserved and given a new programme. The former bakery became KOHO — a venue for culture, cooking events, exhibitions and concerts. Above are a flexible coworking floor and a furnished short-term apartment. The neighbouring house adds four more short-term apartments to the ensemble; a shared courtyard connects both buildings. The historic fabric, load-bearing structure and original staircase were retained. Wood-fibre insulation, heritage-compatible PV panels and a shared heat pump improve the energy balance. Rebuilt, not demolished.
