Sir David Chipperfield
David Chipperfield is one of the most influential architects of our time. After studying at the Kingston School of Art and the Architectural Association in London, he gained experience in the offices of Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster before founding his own studio in 1985. Today, David Chipperfield Architects is represented internationally with offices in London, Berlin, Shanghai and Milan.
His unmistakable style - characterised by clear, minimalist forms and a masterful interplay of light, space and material - has been constantly developed. The iconic quality of his work has been recognised many times over, including the RIBA Stirling Prize (2007) for the Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach, the Mies van der Rohe Award and the German Architecture Prize (2011) for the Neues Museum in Berlin. In 2010, he was raised to the peerage by the Queen - a further acknowledgement of his outstanding achievements.
Jury Statement
Sir David Chipperfield has not only enriched modern architecture with his iconic building projects, but has also positively influenced it worldwide. His style, as clear and precise as Japanese aesthetics, is a common thread running through his impressive work. He has received numerous international honours for his outstanding achievements, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and was raised to the peerage by the Queen. However, these honours are not only earned through his design language - they are the result of a deeply humanistic approach that always has the people who live and work in his buildings in mind. Chipperfield's designs are imbued with a symbiotic approach that incorporates the location and culture right from the planning stage. And integrates sustainability as an integral component. The fact that he was one of the first signatories of the ‘UK Architects Declare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency’ initiative emphasises his authenticity.
For his extraordinary life's work, his visionary creativity and his tireless influence on architecture, the jury of the German Design Award 2023 is honouring Sir David Chipperfield with the Personality of the Year Award.
