The extension integrates sensitively into the ensemble of listed buildings from 1805 and 1890. Through recessed positioning and measured heights, the historic solitaires remain legible, while the new building establishes a clear, identity-giving address. Responding to the topography with a split-level typology, it opens polygonally to the Jordan Park. The foyer frames the historic façades, while five courtrooms are arranged as “courts in the green”, with generous glazing connecting interior and landscape. Photo credits: Brigida González.
The Jury‘s Statement
With a subtle interplay between heritage and contemporary, »Erweiterung Amtsgericht in Kaufbeuren« establishes a harmonious dialogue between listed buildings and new architecture. The split-level typology responds precisely to the topography, while expansive glazing opens up views to the Jordanpark. The characterful address formation, sensitively engaging with the public realm, stands out and sets this project apart at the highest level of distinction.
