Details

The ‘Light & Schools’ physics school laboratory at the University of Hamburg is a compact, ultra-modern pavilion at the entrance to the Bahrenfeld research campus. The generous glazing opens up the building to the public and invites exploration. The centrepiece is a modular laboratory and seminar area around a central room core. Two old pine trees have been integrated into the outdoor space. Sustainability is demonstrated by the extensive green roof and natural lighting (DGNB Silver) – an inspiring place for scientific education.

The Jury‘s Statement

The powerful interplay of striking concrete architecture and floor-to-ceiling transparency makes a clear statement for open science. Physik-Schullabor »Light & Schools« unites nature and function into a charismatic learning environment that encourages interaction. The sensitive integration of existing pine trees and the memorable design of the entrance area are especially convincing, highlighting the outstanding quality of this Gold-level project.
