Details

The tower of the Fulda city palace is a landmark building in the baroque city centre. As part of the overall renovation, a lift and a staircase have been incorporated into the cultural monument in such a way that different perspectives create an exciting interior space within the atmospheric historic shell. The architectural style continued at the top of the tower. An abstract steel structure has been designed to reflect the historic shape of tower domes, which are known during the Renaissance and Baroque period but whose exact outline has not been handed down. Finally, the museum-like interior complements the overall concept.

The Jury‘s Statement

The subtle interplay of history and contemporary design defines the »Turm Stadtschloss Fulda«. The sensitive integration of modern elements such as the steel structure and elevator into the existing building fabric creates a space full of character and emotional resonance. Carefully composed sightlines keep the historic shell palpable. The outstanding approach to proportions and materiality gives this public building a distinctive, timeless presence.
