This project utilized a vast, old mining pit to create a massive space by covering it up, serving as a venue for Buddhist sermons, ceremonies, and visits. The surrounding rock walls of the pit were simply reinforced and left untouched to preserve the original features as much as possible. This created a contrast between the modern architectural structure and the authentic natural environment, emphasizing Buddhist concept of conserving and nurturing nature following the localization of Buddhism.
The Jury‘s Statement
The spectacular temple was built on the site of a disused mining pit located at the top of a hill. While the upper section of the temple embodies all the splendor of traditional religious architecture, the modern substructure spanning the old pit offers a place of tranquility and inner contemplation. A fascinating building project that excitingly combines tradition and modernity.
