Details

The "Red House" in Mechernich, a relict from lead ore extraction, was renovated after the "Eifelflood" in 2021 and protected against future floods with simple measures. The massive exterior walls were restored in a resource-efficient manner, damaged wooden structures on the ground floor were complemented with minimized steel constructions, technical installations were left exposed or relocated to safe upper floor, and historic wooden structures on upper floor were repaired using materials removed from other parts of the house. The open structures characterize the spaces, and the house remains preserved as a landmark of local significance.

The Jury‘s Statement

The resource-efficient revitalization of a historic building demonstrates impressively how minimal interventions can achieve maximum impact. The open structure and the clever integration of modern materials not only preserve the heritage character but also offer sustainable protection against future natural events.
