Details
The listed building complex, which is in a state of severe disrepair, is located directly in the city centre of Hilden. The testimony to industrial culture consists of the town hall (administration) and the factory behind it (production of roller engravings). The design concept followed the design strategy that everything that was there represented value. Components were repaired, ground, sandblasted, stripped, oiled and welded. The visibility of the traces of time is an important design element. Immediately after the revitalization, the building complex became a frequently used third place in the neighbourhood as a new city quarter.
The Jury‘s Statement
The former roller engraving plant has been converted into a district with modern premises for offices, apartments, workshops, therapy and day café. The design is characterized by the careful integration of historical elements. The listed building complex was revitalized by valuing existing materials and using visible traces of time as design elements. This approach creates a vibrant urban district that is adopted as the third place in the neighborhood.
