Details

Traditional Japanese townhouses, or "machiya," integrated nature into daily life with a central garden, fostering a unique aesthetic and respect for nature. Modern homes often isolate themselves from nature due to a focus on functionality. Architect Shin Takamatsu sought to revive this tradition in a narrow Tokyo house by designing a central courtyard, or "well of light," allowing light and air to flow freely inside. The shifting play of light and shadow creates a deep connection with nature, expanding the space both horizontally and vertically, giving residents the feeling of being embraced by the sky.

The Jury‘s Statement

The two-storey single-family home with wooden frame structure reinterprets the concept of traditional Japanese townhouse by promoting connection to nature through a central courtyard. This architectural solution creates a harmonious interplay of light and space, which gives the residents inside a feeling of openness and connection to nature. »'SKY MISSION' IN THE SKY Jiyūgaoka house« shows how contemporary architecture can capture the essence of traditional building styles.
