Details

neue Serie57® is neither a revival nor a reworking of an old type. It is a discovery—or rather a rediscovery. Designed by Günter Gerhard Lange in 1957, who had caught the spirit of the times and simplified the youngest child of the Akzidenz-Grotesk family. Unfortunately, it was never made into a family—until Erik Spiekermann discovered it in a mislabelled case. Prints from the original metal type were used by Alexander Roth to design the very first digital version of Akzidenz-Grotesk Serie 57.

The Jury‘s Statement

Serie57® is no ordinary typeface; it is a discovery and a new discovery at the same time. Designed in 1957 by Günter Gerhard Lange, it remained incomplete for a long time. It was only rediscovered by a lucky coincidence when Erik Spiekermann found it in a mislabelled type case. Alexander Roth used the prints from the lead typesetting to design the first digital and complete version of the Akzidenz-Grotesk Serie 57. Magnificently realised, the Serie57® is characterised by expert as well as meticulous detail work and a passion for typography. And the beautiful story behind it gives the design a unique charm that makes this typeface special.
