'SKY MISSION' IN THE SKY Jiyūgaoka house

Details
Traditional Japanese townhouses, or "machiya," integrated nature into daily life with a central garden, fostering a unique aesthetic and respect for nature. Modern homes often isolate themselves from nature due to a focus on functionality. Architect Shin Takamatsu sought to revive this tradition in a narrow Tokyo house by designing a central courtyard, or "well of light," allowing light and air to flow freely inside. The shifting play of light and shadow creates a deep connection with nature, expanding the space both horizontally and vertically, giving residents the feeling of being embraced by the sky.
