Gold for Outstanding App Design in the Energy Sector
Those who understand their own energy consumption can act more purposefully and often save more than expected. The app from energy provider Yello shows how: It makes consumption and costs not only transparent but also interactively tangible for its users. For this achievement, it was awarded Gold at the German Design Awards 2025 in the category Excellent Communications Design – Apps.
The Yello app serves as both a service and a control centre. It enables users to easily manage electricity and gas contracts, submit meter readings via camera, track costs, and flexibly adjust instalments. With intuitive design, a clear structure, and features such as reminders and an integrated torch, it simplifies everyday life – even when reading meters in a dark basement.
“With a clear and intuitive user interface, the app sets new standards in user experience.”
– Jury statement, German Design Awards 2025
The jury was particularly impressed by the successful interplay of intuitive interface and technical sophistication. Their statement reflects this: “With a clear and intuitive user interface, the app sets new standards in user experience. The seamless integration of a new colour palette and consistent brand presence enables transparent communication of energy consumption. Innovative use cases support users in saving costs and reducing CO2 emissions,” the jury concluded.
Good App Design Drives Transparency and Sustainability
By honouring the Yello App, the German Design Awards underline how well-designed apps can foster self-determination, transparency, and sustainability in everyday life. This is precisely the ambition of the awards: to spotlight design that makes a difference.
