Uzbekistan’s Expo Pavilion 2025 Wins Gold at the German Design Awards

The Uzbek Pavilion, “Garden of Knowledge,” at Expo 2025 in Osaka, demonstrates how architecture can serve as a learning laboratory and a symbol of transformation. Designed by Atelier Brückner, this German Design Awards Gold Winner merges traditional craftsmanship with sustainable, innovative design, showcasing circular design and Expo architecture.

Tradition Meets a Sustainable Future

A forest of slender wooden columns, interwoven with light and shadow. Between them unfolds a space that is more than architecture: a place of knowledge and encounter. At its heart stands an impressive eight-metre-high wooden sculpture, evoking the character of traditional Uzbek columned buildings.

This is how the Uzbek Pavilion “Garden of Knowledge – A Laboratory for a Future Society” welcomes its visitors at Expo 2025 in Osaka. Designed by Stuttgart-based Atelier Brückner, it bridges the gap between cultural heritage and innovative architecture, making societal transformation tangible. For this, it was honoured with Gold in the category “Excellent Architecture – Fair and Exhibition” at the German Design Awards 2025.

A Pavilion as a Learning Laboratory

The pavilion is designed as an open place of learning and exchange. Visitors experience education, innovation and sustainability in the context of Uzbek society and its transformation. The exhibition addresses pressing issues such as promoting a green economy and protecting cultural heritage, while aligning them with the goals of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.

“A prime example of the fusion of cultural heritage and innovative architecture.”

The use of regional materials such as clay, brick, wood and earth – all fully reusable – makes the pavilion a showcase of circular architecture. After the Expo, it will be dismantled, transported to Uzbekistan and reassembled as a school or community facility. This forward-looking approach particularly impressed the jury of the German Design Awards 2025: “The pavilion by Atelier Brückner is a prime example of the fusion of cultural heritage and innovative architecture. It convinces through its consistent sustainability, strong symbolism and its role as an open learning laboratory that actively engages visitors.”

Architecture as a Catalyst for Change

With this recognition, the German Design Awards 2025 honour a project that unites design, sustainability and social responsibility in exemplary fashion. The Uzbek Pavilion illustrates how architecture transcends mere function and acts as a catalyst for transformation.
