Peter Schmidt
Jury Statement
Peter Schmidt stands like no other for the holistic staging of brands. Not many consumers will know him by name, but there is hardly anyone who has not come into contact with the countless logos, packaging and products he has designed: whether Apollinaris, Arzberg, 4711 or Laura Biagiotti, Jil Sander or Joop - Peter Schmidt has accompanied many major brands over the years that still bear his signature today. He has also designed many magazines, such as Harper's Bazaar.
His perfume bottle designed for Jil Sander even made it into New York's Museum of Modern Art for a time. Peter Schmidt currently works with his partners Daniel Belliero, Marcel Zandée and Carsten Corleis under the name THE STUDIOS - PETER SCHMIDT DANIEL BELLIERO MARCEL ZANDÉE CARSTEN CORLEIS for an international clientele.
He created the new design for the Bocksbeutel PS with them in 2015. In 2016, he and the team created a global design relaunch for DKMS to mark its 25th anniversary. His stage designs for theatre, opera and ballet, which he has been designing since the 1990s for John Neumeier, the director of the Hamburg Ballet, among others, also show that he has a soft spot for the big stage. He has remodelled the Hamburg State Opera House and the concert hall in Bamberg. His passion for theatre and opera, which the Bayreuth-born designer discovered early on, can be seen again in his way of staging brands: he offers them a stage on which they move like dancers and develop their own character. Peter Schmidt's work is a magnificent mirror of the zeitgeist and has been formative for German brand history for decades.
