Details
Built around 1910, the listed sports hall in central Potsdam was carefully renovated and adapted for use by local schools and sports clubs. Non-original annexes were removed to restore the clarity of the historic structure. A modest single-storey rear extension now houses equipment rooms without compromising the building’s character. New spatial layouts ensure barrier-free access, modern changing areas, and multifunctional rooms. The project balances heritage conservation, contemporary functionality, and urban enhancement, creating a coherent ensemble with the adjacent new sports hall.
The Jury‘s Statement
The subtle restoration of the original building structure lends the »Historische Sporthalle Potsdam« a powerful sense of authenticity. The harmoniously integrated extension and the strategic removal of non-original elements create a lasting dialogue between history and the present. The consistent combination of heritage-sensitive renovation, accessibility and contemporary functionality is particularly impressive and sets a charismatic benchmark in the public realm.
