Details

Amid climate challenges, buildings must evolve toward energy-efficient, responsive architecture. The Flectuation project developed FlectoLine, a dynamic façade shading system installed on a greenhouse at the Botanical Garden, University of Freiburg. Using fiber-reinforced composites with pneumatic actuation, it responds to environment and user input via control system + digital twin. Inspired by biology, it integrates photovoltaics for energy. FlectoLine is the first exterior compliant-mechanism façade, combining sustainability, real-time adaptability, and large-scale feasibility.

The Jury‘s Statement

A consistently adaptive façade solution that sensitively responds to environmental changes and translates them into a distinctive form: »FlectoLine« combines bio-inspired mechanisms, fiber-reinforced materials and integrated photovoltaics into a compelling architectural response to climate challenges. The convincing interplay of technological precision and aesthetic clarity especially reflects the exceptional standard required at this level of distinction.
