Details

Formerly the Royal Railways Main Workshop, the sprawling 26-ha post-industrial site known as RAW had long been neglected until emerging as Magdeburg’s largest reclamation endeavour. RAMSBURG project, conceived during its design phase, meticulously adhered to user-centred design principles at both urban and architectural scales. Despite its abandonment, the existing RAW area retains a profound significance in the city's collective memory, embodying its industrial heritage. Therefore, the primary objective is to rejuvenate the area for urban use while conserving its industrial character.

The Jury‘s Statement

The careful combination of historical heritage and modern urban planning approaches has transformed a formerly neglected area into a vibrant urban space. The new “RAMSBURG” quarter manages to both preserve cultural identity and integrate contemporary usage concepts, which enriches urban life in the long term.
