Details

The Smart Circular Bridge in Ulm is the world's first bridge made of a biocomposite material composed of flax fibres and bio-based polyester resin that can withstand vehicles weighing up to 12 tonnes. Designed by Prof. Hanaa Dahy, it combines structural and design requirements with a reference to the iconic Ulm Cathedral. Sensors installed inside the bridge transmit data that is translated into audio by the KLANGERFINDER studio. This turns the bridge into a musical instrument for pedestrians.

The Jury‘s Statement

The subtle interplay of sustainable materials and a powerful design language defines the »Smart Circular Bridge in Ulm«. Its sensitive reference to the city’s iconic silhouette is matched by the elegant integration of sensory sound experiences. This bridge sets a meaningful accent for urban spaces and impresses with its consistently forward-thinking and charismatic realization at the highest architectural level.
