Fumino Hasegawa

Fumino Hasegawa from Weißensee School of Art and Design Berlin works with product design, materials and craft techniques. Her projects explore time, movement and perception, ranging from a clock made with folded translucent paper to an interactive tea ritual.

Time and Material

Time and material are recurring starting points in Fumino Hasegawa’s work. “Blurred Time” is a clock made with folded translucent paper that moves continuously. As the layers rotate and overlap, they create changing forms and shadows. Rather than displaying the exact time, the object focuses on its passage.

Her master’s project, “The Space Between”, draws on the Japanese concept of Ma, the space between objects, actions or events. Hasegawa applies this idea to a tea ritual. A steam-responsive paper lid and vessels made from porcelain and washi accompany the period in which the tea cools.

In “Bubla”, Hasegawa works with air bubbles in glass. Developed in collaboration with Glasmanufaktur Harzkristall, the vessels use bubbles that are deliberately created and positioned within the material. Hasegawa studied Product Design at Kyoto University of the Arts and is completing her master’s degree in Product Design at Weißensee School of Art and Design Berlin.
