Shanghai Museum East Pavilion
The Shanghai Museum East Hall rejects the typical monumental object-building for a new model, which blends culture and commerce to create a new “field” of urban activity. Inspired by traditional Chinese oracle bone inscriptions, the museum is defined by an intricate volume floating above a commercial plinth. Designed as a landscaped mass, the commercial plinth incorporates deep voids that divide the site into multiple spatial zones.
With its incisive contours inspired by traditional Chinese inscriptions on oracle bones, the museum is an imposing landmark.
