Fenix I

Fenix I

Description

Rotterdam gained a bold and iconic building: Fenix I. The original Fenix warehouse (1922) has been preserved and 45,000 sqm has been redeveloped for mixed-use. A unique steel structure was built through the monumental warehouse to lift a new residential volume on top comprising 214 lofts with a high degree of flexibility in size and layout. Just months after completion, Fenix I shows it has contributed to social cohesion in the neighbourhood and is home to an inclusive and caring community.

Statement of the jury

With its structural architecture, the building is inspired by a cargo ship loaded with containers lying in the harbour, thus perfectly integrating into the harbour environment. It is an interesting design and a successful example of a good way of dealing with historic stock.
