Roskilde Festival Folk High School
Description
The Roskilde Festival Højskole is housed in a former concrete factory, reusing the original structure’s columns and roof but replacing the walls and interior. The design is based upon a box-in-a-box concept: Colourful modules fill the warehouse-like shell of the main building, all arranged around a central spine cutting from one side of the building to the other. Alongside this route is a wooden tribune that acts as the communal heart of the school.
Statement of the jury
The colourful cubes, integrated into the existing architecture of the old concrete factory through a distinctive box-in-box concept, act as classrooms reminiscent of the modern interior style of a start-up company. A refreshingly-different choice of architecture for a school, which underlines the informal teaching style beautifully.
